The dress enigma

Nowadays, there are lots of images that go through the Internet and become very popular while lighting up digital debates. The “new entry” of these days is the dress that seems white and gold or blue and black.

IMG_9956

This simple dress is made by a Chinese manufacturer who said that the original colours are blue and black: the thing that set the Internet on fire was that this cloth appears to be white and gold to a lot of web users or blue and black to others.
In reality, though science and tons of articles all over the Internet are not in agreement, if the image is modified the eye sees it in a different way.

IMG_9954

This comparison, taken from Wired.com, shows how much the dress changes if the whole brightness, saturation and other technical aspects are switched towards white or blue.
The inner fact about this last Internet-breaking picture is that our eye cells and retinal rods perceive colours in very different ways so that this particular cloth seems blue and black to some people, white and gold to others.

And you? Which colours do you detect with your eyes? Did you notice any differences in the comparison? Let me know in the comments below!

Feyenoord’s hooligans devastate Rome

Hi readers!
During the last two days there were clashes in Rome between Italian police and Dutch football fans that led to several arrests among the Feyenoord’s hooligans.

IMG_9887

It all started two days ago, when some drunk Dutch people began throwing broken beer bottles to the police agents patrolling Piazza di Spagna.
The policemen protected themselves and called for help: in a few minutes Rome was theatre of an urban war between drunk barbaric guys and Italian police with shields and helmets.
However, the most important fact is that the main fountain in Piazza di Spagna, sculpted by Bernini and just restored, has been seriously damaged by hooligans.

IMG_9886

“The Dutch authorities have to bear the expense” said the Mayor of Rome Ignazio Marino (the previous restoration demanded 200.00€) .
Apart from this economical aspect, I would like to write a few lines about the inner aspect of the happening.
It is unacceptable that drunk people can cause damage to an extraordinary Italian monument and terrorise a whole city: what hooligans made is an offence to Italian culture and, therefore, European one.
As you probably know, I am Italian and it is shocking seeing one of the most beautiful cities in the world being attacked and abused by ignorant and no-respect-for-anything-nor-anyone persons.
It has also to be said that Dutch journalists condemned the acts and showed solidarity with Italian colleagues.

Thanks for reading, I hope this was enjoyable!

LAST MINUTE EDIT: It seems that the damages caused are, as experts say, “irreparable”. I still hope that this could reveal untrue.

The Elephants made it! Ivory Coast wins the African Cup

Hey readers!
The 2015 African Cup of Nations has just ended with the victory of the Ivory Coast.
The “Elephants”, as they are called, defeated Ghana 9-8 on penalties.

IMG_9809

The undisputed protagonist was the Ivorian goalkeeper Barry who first blocked a penalty kicked by his Ghanaian colleague then scored the final goal.

IMG_9805

This is the second time (the first was in 1992) that the Ivorian national football team wins the competition.

This was a real quick news from TM, hope you enjoyed!

Why you should buy a cat and why you should not

Hey readers! Today I’m going to write a few words about one of the most common pet, the cat.
Everyone knows how is it done, how it meows and how many hours does it sleep.

IMG_9749

As a long-experienced cat owner, I can show you the pros and cons of having a cat at home, and that’s what I will do. In other words, why you should and why you should not buy a cat.

Pros

A cat is very tidy so you won’t have to worry about cleaning it.
A cat forces you to tidy your home up in order to not allow it to lay on your well-pressed clothes.
A cat is less devoted to its master than a dog but it will still show its particular tenderness and love.
Finally, a cat pays a lot of attention to everything you do and is very curious.
A cat will keep company with you while sleeping, of course.
A cat is so cute that you will not be able to resist.

Cons

Most of the times, a cat will not come towards you when you are back home.
A cat, as well as a dog, can become a lot spoiled.
A cat will probably scratch you, at least a few times.
A cat sleeps on average sixteen hours per day which is a real torture when you have to study or work hard.
A cat is very independent which can be a pro or a con sometimes.

Having said these things, I have to say that a cat is not like a dog that will immediately show its love for the master: this animal is more difficult to discover and understand but I guarantee that a cat will never let you down. It is able to give you bigger and deeper satisfactions than another common pet.

This was a little comparison about the cat, I hope you enjoyed it. Don’t forget to let me know your opinions!

Crossy Road: a chicken in your pocket

Yes, there it is, a chicken. A chicken that crosses a road. A pixelated chicken that crosses a pixelated road. There’s something wrong with it, for sure.

IMG_9738

Although it could seem a little bit strange, there’s a game out here about what I have written just a few lines above.
Crossy road is a popular iOS/Android/Google Play game developed by Hipster Whale with the purpose of going through congested roads in a chicken’s shoes.

IMG_9739

You can choose between a lot of playable characters that stretches from elephants to frogs and vampires, all of them, as usual, pixelated.

The game is very simple and features some useful options such as the low battery mode or the no-shadows button. It is very funny, addictive and has no claim: Crossy Road’s simplicity and spontaneity makes it a wonderful app to have on your smartphone.
One last thing, it’s free.

Feel free to leave a comment about CR or other games you tried.

Super Bowl XLIX: N. E. Patriots win the Vince Lombardi trophy

IMG_9736

New England Pats defeated Seattle Seahawks in this evening match 28-24 in the Super Bowl XLIX.
The Pats won the game after being down up to ten points: an extraordinary Tom Brady played an incredible match that gave him his third Super Bowl Most Valuable Player title of his career.
This is the fourth title for New England and Seattle has to regret itself because the title was in its hands till almost the end.
During the interval, there was a magnificent Katy Perry show on a mechanical lion singing in a flame dress (OMG).

This was a flash from TM. Hope it was useful.

George Orwell’s 1984

There are books you read at school or, at least, you are supposed to, that don’t leave a mark in your life; there are others that enchant you and have a special place in your mind and heart.
George Orwell’s 1984 is in the latter type.
Today, I will not review this work by Eric Arthur Blair (yes, his name’s that) but simply share with you my personal opinion.

IMG_9713

I was fascinated by the dystopian environment and society portrayed in the novel while, in the meantime, being aware of the dangers a similar point of view can create. There are parts of this book where you can see yourself in Winston’s shoes (1984’s main character) and feel the emotions that the employee of the Ministry of Love has.
You are guided through the story by Orwell’s expert hand that so often leaves you alone with Winston against the awe-inspiring greatness of the Party.
I think the most impressive aspect of the book is that it has been written in 1948 imaging a dystopian future (so a negative future where humans were fighting each other, the world is permanent war, there is no freedom) with its particular technologies, way of thinking, etc. where Orwell’s disillusioned hopes about the Soviet Union came out.
So many interpretations have been given to this literary work, but the extraordinary thing that remains over the years is the author ability of displaying the inner contradictions and terrible sides of the regime of Big Brother and, speaking generally, of every type of dictatorship.

Since this blog’s aim is to give a simple and quick view on everything, all I have to say is: “Buy this book, because it is worth every penny.”
Let me know what you think of this book or of other Orwell’s works!

The Rolex Datejust: an immortal myth

IMG_9703

Rolex is probably the most famous luxury watch producer in the world: everyone knows the crown symbol or, at least, the prestige that goes with the brand name.
Today, we will talk about the Rolex Datejust, the first automatic chronometer wristwatch to have a date on the dial (so the name).

SONY DSC

It was first presented in 1945 and from that year the main aspect of the watch did not change: the reference which is alike the 40’s version is the 116234. This serial number refers to white gold bezel, Jubilèe bracelet and steel case.
The Datejust is the most customisable Rolex wristwatch as it features multiple bezels, tons of dials and two types of bracelet (Oyster and Jubilèe).
Also, the date on the dial changes of colour in some versions.
In Baselworld 2009 (an annual luxury watch fair in Basel, Switzerland), the Datejust II, an updated version of the watch, was presented. Nonetheless, experts do not consider it as much as its father.

The Datejust is an iconic watch and yet one of the most beautiful on the market.
The price is not revealed by Rolex but I think it is around 5500€ (6200$).

I am of the opinion that this timepiece is, now more than ever, the best choice for an evergreen and always perfect Rolex wristwatch.

And you guys? Do you like the DJ and luxury watches? Feel free to leave a comment!
